Maine Department of Labor Offers Free Workplace Safety Trainings in July
Free workplace safety trainings will be held in Augusta this July, covering topics including ergonomics, silica exposure, ladder safety, electrical hazards, and OSHA compliance.

The Maine Department of Labor will offer a series of no-cost workplace safety and labor law training sessions throughout July at the SafetyWorks! Training Institute, located at 45 Commerce Drive in Augusta. The sessions are open to employers, supervisors, and workers interested in improving safety compliance and reducing workplace injuries.
The schedule is as follows:
Workstation Ergonomics – Video Display Terminal
Tuesday, July 15, 2025, from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
This session covers Maine’s VDT law and offers practical guidance on reducing the risk of musculoskeletal injuries at computer workstations. Attendees will learn to identify ergonomic hazards and evaluate workstation setups.
Silica Awareness
Wednesday, July 16, 2025, from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
With strengthened OSHA standards now in place, this course focuses on identifying sources of silica exposure in the workplace and understanding requirements in both the construction and general industry standards.
Ladder Safety
Monday, July 21, 2025, from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
Falls from ladders are a leading cause of injuries in the workplace. This course reviews ladder planning, inspection, and basic safety techniques to prevent falls and ensure safe use.
Van Safety
Wednesday, July 23, 2025, from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
This training addresses hazards associated with transporting people in non-commercial, multi-passenger vans. The course also offers policy recommendations and training tools for employers.
Impairment Detection Training for Employers
Thursday, July 24, 2025, from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
This full-day course is designed for owners, managers, and supervisors to identify and respond to impairment in the workplace. It fulfills federal Department of Transportation requirements for reasonable suspicion training and aligns with Maine’s Substance Use Testing Law.
Practical Approach to Electrical Safety
Monday, July 28, 2025, from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
Participants will be introduced to the hazards of electricity, common risks found in workplaces, and safe work practices for avoiding electrical injuries.
10-Hour General Industry Standards (OSHA)
Thursday, July 31, and Friday, August 1, 2025
Attendees who complete the training will receive an OSHA 10-hour course completion certificate. Participants may register and find additional SafetyWorks! class listings at the Maine Department of Labor’s website:
